Syracuse University signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment in 2007. Since then, Climate Action Plans have been issued as the University has evolved. The University tracks scope 1, 2, 3 greenhouse gas emissions. Click here to learn more about the greenhouse gas inventory.

Below is a line graph depicting Syracuse University’s emissions measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e). Note, scope 3 emissions were not accounted for until 2017. Overall, there has been a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2024 compared to 2011 levels.

2024 Climate Action Plan

The 2024 Climate Action Plan (PDF version) establishes a two phase approach to reaching carbon neutrality by 2032. Phase I focuses on energy efficiency projects, the transition to a zero emissions fleet, and scope 3 policy updates. Phase I also explains how upgrades to the steam and chilled water plant will help reduce annual emissions, specifically scope 2. Strategies to reduce scope 3 emissions are also included in phase I.

Phase II details the potential strategies that will be used to mitigate remaining emissions. This includes forest sequestration, sequestration in the built environment, onsite renewable energy, and carbon offsets.

2022 Climate Action Plan

The 2022 Climate Action Plan (PDF version) focuses on energy efficiency upgrades, quantifying carbon sinks and offsets, improving data accuracy, and effective communication and outreach.

2009 Climate Action Plan

Syracuse University’s first Climate Action Plan (PDF version) was issued in 2009 with a goal of reaching carbon neutrality by the end of 2040.
