In the spring of 2023, Syracuse University committed to drastically reducing its use of single-use plastics by the 2027-28 academic year. In the spring of 2024, Sustainability Management published a Plastic Reduction Plan. The plan explains how single-use plastics will be categorized, measured, and ultimately phased out. It also touches on the educational aspect of proposal disposal techniques and outreach. The University has already made progress in converting single-use plastics to alternative materials.

Below is the dashboard showing single use plastic reduction progress. This is a dynamic dashboard and will be updated as new data becomes available. Each percentage in the goals column is the amount by which each category will be reduced. For example, 50% of plastic single serving items (i.e. chips and pretzels) will be switched to compostables or some other alternative by 2027.
