Pete’s Giving Garden

Pete’s Giving Garden was founded in 2019 after the need for fresh produce within the Hendricks Chapel Food Pantry became very clear. Hendricks Chapel partnered with Sustainability Management to bring a garden to life to supply the food pantry with nutritious ingredients grown on South Campus. Since its inception, the garden has produced over 600 pounds of produce and grown to include the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamic Food Studies and Nutrition Program. Sustainability Management oversees day-to-day operations, including volunteer hours and outreach events for the garden. In 2019, the garden started with a small raised bed and has since grown to include another raised bed, Three Sisters gardens, ADA beds, a pollinator garden, apple and pear trees, raspberry bushes, and four traditional row gardens. As such, the mission of the garden has also grown to include health and wellness for individuals (therapeutic weeding, anyone?) and provide an opportunity for research. However, the main mission for the garden will always be to grow food for our students using sustainable agriculture practices.

Seed Sovereignty Garden Dedication

Ethan Tyo presented his graduate practicum in 2021 which brought back the ancestral seeds of the Three Sisters (corn, squash, and beans) of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to their land where Syracuse University now occupies. A dedication ceremony was held in Pete’s Giving Garden on May 14, 2021, to document this monumental occasion.
